Christine Bent
Operational Leader
Allina Health’s Clinical Service Lines

Christine Bent is the operational leader of Allina Health’s Clinical Service Lines (CSLs), including Virginia Piper Cancer Institute, Courage Kenny Rehabilitation Institute, Allina Health Mental Health, Mother Baby, the John Nasseff Neuroscience Institute, the Penny George Institute for Health and Healing, the Phillips Eye Institute, and Cardiovascular (including the Minneapolis Heart Institute, United Heart & Vascular Clinic, and Metropolitan Heart and Vascular Institute). In this capacity, she is responsible for the strategic, quality, operational, and financial performance of the CSLs in conjunction with the overarching physician leader and dyad partner Dr. Penny Wheeler. The aim of the CSLs is to provide consistently exceptional and coordinated care for those Allina Health serves in order to help patients achieve their desired health outcomes. This involves close collaboration with the hospitals, clinics, and home and community division within Allina Health as well as other community partners to connect care to best meet individual patient’s needs.

Prior to this role, Ms. Bent was the Chief Operating Officer of the Minneapolis Heart Institute® (MHI®) where, in conjunction with the physician President, she provided professional management to the 128-bed Heart Hospital within Abbott Northwestern Hospital and MHI®’s extensive outreach program. Her background is in physician practice management in both independent practices and integrated healthcare delivery systems. She graduated from Carleton College in Northfield, Minnesota with a B.A. in Psychology and obtained her Masters in Healthcare Administration from the University of Minnesota.


 
Ginger Biesbrock PA-C, MPAS, MPH, AAC
Director of Operations
Spectrum Health Medical Group West Michigan Heart Administration

Ginger Biesbrock is currently the Director of Operations at West Michigan Heart, a 39 Physician practice with 24 mid-level providers. Ginger oversees all operations for ambulatory services, tertiary care and rural health practices.  Ginger’s background as a Physician Assistant with a Master of Physician Assistant Studies from Grand Valley State University has been a valuable asset to her work in operations. Ginger also obtained a Master of Public Health degree from Michigan State University.

Prior to her role as Director, Ginger was the COO of The Cardiovascular Group at Centra-health. This consisted of 22 Physicians and 10 mid-level providers. Ginger’s responsibility included all operations for ambulatory services in an outpatient department of Centra-health.

Ginger has been a Midlevel Provider for 13 years, 10 of which have been in Cardiology and the other 3 years were spent in Internal Medicine. She has worked in acute care settings and also provided ambulatory services. Both Grand Valley State University and Western Michigan University have utilized Ginger as an adjunct faculty member for the past 8 years. 

Ginger has done process improvement work to include readmissions, Heart Failure clinic operations, multidisciplinary clinic development and general office operations.  She has received greenbelt training in Lean/Six-sigma. 


 
Cathleen Biga
President & CEO
Cardiovascular Management of Illinois

Cathleen Biga is President and CEO of Cardiovascular Management of Illinois. She has over 30 years experience in health care, including positions as hospital CEO, VPof patient Care services and has been active in practice management for the last 15 years. She has recently completed three integrations for her current groups – successfully transitioning 46 cardiologists. CMI now offers management, billing, and EHR support for the integrated groups. Cathleen serves as the Executive Director of Adventist Heart and Vascular Institute and is instrumental in the development and growth of the CV Service Line for the organization. She has been active nationally with consulting and lecturing on physician/hospital integration, development and formation of CV SL, quality initiatives, development of Clinical co management agreements, designing balanced quality score cards, and advocacy issues. She serves on the advisory board of Medaxiom, is Past-President of CSCA, past-president of Cardiology Advocacy alliance, an active member of numerous ACC committees and workgroups and is on the Illinois Board of Councilors of ACC. She serves on multiple Boards and remains active in her community. With her background in hospital administration she is able to bring a unique perspective to practice management in these complex times.



 
Reginald Blaber M.D., FACC
Executive Director
Lourdes Cardiovascular Institute

Dr. Blaber is responsible for the strategic and operational leadership of the cardiovascular service line, including business development and performance from a quality, operational and financial perspective.   He provides oversight of the service line’s co-management organization and cardiology physician practices.  Dr. Blaber also serves as Chairman of the Department of Medicine at Our Lady of Lourdes Medical Center and is a practicing cardiologist.  He is a member of the board of the Haddonfield Ambulance Association.


 
Denise Brown

Denise Brown is the Vice-President of MedAxiom Consulting. As a health care executive with over 25 years of experience in hospital system and private practice healthcare operations, operational efficiency, physician recruitment, business development, marketing, and facilities planning; she recently achieved her Green Belt in Lean Sigma from the Johns Hopkins, Center for Innovation in Quality Patient Care.
 
Prior to her current position she was Chief Operating Officer at West Michigan Heart in Grand Rapids, Michigan. There she led the clinical, technical and business operations initiatives; business development efforts and operationalized both co-management and integration efforts for the practice. Ms. Brown also served as Director of Business Development for Wisconsin Heart and Vascular Clinics, owners of the Wisconsin Heart Hospital. She has extensive experience in developing clinical program models to drive referring physician, patient/consumer and payer engagement.
 
Denise also held prior positions as the AV.P. of Purchasing for Health Services Corporation of America (HSCA) one of the founding members of AmeriNet GPO as well as Materials Management Directorships at two healthcare systems in Wisconsin.


 
Dr Charles Brown, III MD FACC, FSCAI

Dr. Charles L. Brown, III earned his undergraduate degree from the University of New Orleans in New Orleans, Louisiana. He earned his medical degree from Louisiana State University School of Medicine in New Orleans and completed his internship, residency and fellowships in cardiovascular disease and interventional cardiology with Emory University Affiliated Hospitals, where he also he served as Chief Resident of Medicine.  He subsequently obtained additional training in peripheral angioplasty and endovascular therapies at the Red Cross Hospital in Frankfurt, Germany.  He was an Emory Clinic Faculty Member prior to moving to Piedmont in 1992.

Dr. Brown is board-certified in Internal Medicine, Cardiovascular Diseases, and Interventional Cardiology.  He has participated in numerous research studies, authored and co-authored numerous medical publications and continues to contribute articles to the medical literature.

He currently serves as Chief of Cardiovascular Services for Piedmont Heart Institute and Piedmont Healthcare.  Piedmont Heart is now recognized as one of the most prominent Heart Institutes in the country and is a national model for Physician/Hospital integration.

He is a member of numerous professional societies, including Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society, 
American College of Cardiology, Society for Angiography and Intervention, American Heart Association,  Medical Association of Atlanta and the Medical Association of Georgia.


 
Terry Carter MAOL
Director, Cardiovascular Service Line

Terry Carter is the Director of the Cardiovascular Service Line for HealthPartners and Regions Hospital Heart Center. She has an undergraduate degree in Communication from The University of St. Thomas and a Masters in Organizational Leadership from St. Catherine University. During Terry’s time at Regions Hospital Heart Center, the center has been recognized by Thompson Reuters as a Top 100 Heart Hospital and Leapfrog named Regions Hospital a top cardiac care institution for quality and cost.



 
Michael Dickinson MD, FACC
Co-Director of Thoracic Organ Transplant, Medical Director for Heart Failure and Heart Transplant, Chair of Cardiovascular Disease, Frederik Meijer Heart and Vascular Institute, Spectrum Health
Clinical Associate Professor, Michigan State University

Dr. Dickinson is a graduate of Hope College and the University of Michigan Medical School and is a former U.S. Navy physician. After the Navy he was a primary care internal medicine physician for more than 4 years.  He left internal medicine to pursue his passion for heart failure, training in cardiology at Michigan State University and in advanced heart failure and transplant at the Cleveland Clinic.  He has been at Spectrum Health in Grand Rapids MI since 2006 and the Medical Director for Heart Failure since 2007.  He has guided Spectrum Health’s development as a leader in quality programs around heart failure and their development as an advanced heart failure center including new programs in advanced heart failure, ventricular assist devices, and heart and lung transplant.  Dr. Dickinson is Co-Director of Thoracic Organ Transplantation, Medical Director for Heart Transplant, Mechanical Circulatory Support, and Heart Failure Programs.  He also is Chair of Cardiovascular Diseases for Spectrum Health.  He has interests in optimal regional models of care for heart failure including best management of stage D heart failure.  He serves on the guidelines committee for the Heart Failure Society of America and is an active speaker, researcher, and writer.


 
Kristin Doster BS, RDCS, FASE, CPAS
Director of Regional Programs
Prairie Heart Institute of Illinois
Kristin is the Director of Regional Programs for the Prairie Heart Institute of Illinois. She has 25 years of experience in healthcare including respiratory therapy, cardiovascular ultrasound, information technology, and cardiology practice and hospital administration. As the Director of Regional Programs, she is responsible for the development and implementation of system wide Cardiovascular Service Line programs for 8 HSHS Illinois hospitals and Prairie Cardiovascular Consultants. Specialized programs within the Cardiovascular Service line include STAT DVT/PE, Vein Clinic, AFib Clinic, CHF, LVAD, Tele-cardiology, AAA clinic, and Structural Heart Disease including TAVR, PLACE, and MitraClip. In addition to these programs, Kristin implemented and oversees Rapid Read, a diagnostic network facilitating transmission of cardiovascular testing from over 35 community and critical access hospitals across Illinois. She is a Fellow in the American Society of Echocardiography and maintains her certification in PACS Administration.


 
Timothy Gardner MD
Medical Director, Center for Heart & Vascular Health

Timothy J. Gardner, M.D., is Medical Director of the Center for Heart & Vascular Health at Christiana Care Health System in Delaware. He also serves as Executive Director of the Value Institute which was established in 2011 with the goal of achieving the triple aims of improving patient care, enhancing the health of populations, and reducing costs. Dr. Gardner is former president of American Heart Association and American Association of Thoracic Surgery. He served as Chair of the American Board of Thoracic Surgery. Before joining Christiana Care in 2005, he was Chief of Cardiothoracic Surgery at the University of Pennsylvania.  Currently, he is Professor of Surgery at Jefferson University School of Medicine and former Measey Professor of Surgery at the University of Pennsylvania.  He has lectured extensively both nationally and abroad and has authored over 250 scientific papers and textbooks. He continues to provide interviews, presentations and other media appearances based on his extensive professional experiences.  Dr. Gardner is a graduate of Georgetown University Medical School receiving his training in surgery at Johns Hopkins, with final training in cardiac surgery in Auckland, New Zealand. He was Professor of Surgery at Johns Hopkins prior to his move to University of Pennsylvania.

Suzette Jaskie

Suzette Jaskie is President of MedAxiom Consulting and the Executive Vice-President of MedAxiom. Ms. Jaskie was the CEO of West Michigan Heart and Wisconsin Heart and Vascular in Milwaukee, WI prior to her current position. She also previously served as the Executive Director of the Frederick Meijer Heart and Vascular Institute, for Spectrum Health System in Grand Rapids, MI, that governs and manages the cardiovascular service line for the regional health system. Ms. Jaskie has a Masters Degree in Business Administration from the University of Hartford and a Bachelor of Science from the University of Wisconsin.
 
Ms. Jaskie is a former President of Medical Group Management Association's cardiovascular assembly (CSCA) and is currently a serving on the American College of Cardiology's Practice Management Council. Ms. Jaskie is a faculty member of the American College of Cardiology Advanced Leadership Institute and a former board member of the Cardiovascular Advocacy Alliance. She has rich experience in strategic planning and program development and has been a speaker at numerous conferences on varied topics such as Physician Compensation, Strategic Planning, Product Line and Program Development, Performance Management, Operations Efficiency, as well as Governance and Leadership.


 
Todd Leri
Mid-Atlantic Region President
Remedy Partners

Todd Leri, President of the Mid-Atlantic Region, is responsible for leading all aspects of Remedy's risk-bearing episodic program development and implementation with providers in the states of Pennsylvania, Delaware and Maryland. To date, Todd has overseen the launch of 12 large-scale Medicare Bundled Payment programs that aim to improve outcomes for a projected 10,000 patients per year. Specific accomplishments in those launches include: designing novel systems to identify and monitor patient progress throughout the 90-day period, re-aligning expectations with the post-acute provider community around episodic goals, and formalizing gainsharing relationships with physician groups representing over 800 practitioners. Todd is a member of Remedy's Founding Team that created the business plan, fostered the original partner relationships, and designed the service offering.

Prior to joining Remedy, Todd was a Director in Alvarez & Marsal's Healthcare Industry Group where he served in interim management positions and advised companies on performance improvement strategies during times of significant change. 

Todd holds a B.S. in Electrical Engineering and a M.S. in Systems Engineering, with a concentration in Financial Systems, from the University of Pennsylvania.



 
Chris Lloyd

Christopher Lloyd is the Chief Executive Officer of MHMD, the Physician Network for the Memorial Hermann Health System located in Houston, Texas. MHMD includes the largest clinically integrated physician organization in Texas with 2,000 participating physicians. MHMD is currently functioning with Memorial Hermann in the transition from volume to value, population management, and cost/quality management across all contracted populations.
 

Chris has over 25 years of executive experience in acute healthcare settings, including both hospital and physician group management. Prior to assuming his current role in May 2009, Chris was the COO at the 900-bed Memorial Hermann Hospital in the Texas Medical Center. Within the Memorial Hermann System, he has also served as the Chief of Clinical Service Lines. 

Chris also worked for Catholic Healthcare West, serving at St. Joseph’s Hospital/BARROW Neurological Institute in operations and prior, worked for 11 years at Advocate Healthcare in Chicago, Illinois, running hospital operations and a large multispecialty physician group. 



 
Katie Logan
Vice President, Strategy and Professional Services

Katie Logan is Vice President for Strategy and Professional Services for Piedmont Heart Institute, the cardiovascular service line comprised of nearly 100 employed cardiovascular specialists with over 25 locations, and Piedmont Physicians, a multi-specialty group with more than 200 employed primary care and other specialists across 70 locations across north Georgia.

Katie oversees diverse functions for these two groups including strategic and business planning, program development, project management, clinical integration, process improvement, quality, marketing, outreach, education, and cardiovascular research. Partnering with both physicians and operational leaders, Katie focuses on integrating the cardiovascular service line and other key services across the 5-hospital Piedmont Healthcare system. 

Prior to joining Piedmont, Katie was with KPMG, a global professional services firm, as a management consultant with expertise in strategic and business planning, project management, process analysis and improvement, and change management across a variety of industries including healthcare, financial services, manufacturing, and technology. 


 
Dr. Michael Mack

Michael Mack, M.D. has practiced cardiothoracic surgery in Dallas, TX since 1982.  He is board certified in Internal Medicine, General Surgery, and Thoracic Surgery and is currently the Director of Cardiovascular Surgery for Baylor Scott & White Health, Chair of the Baylor Scott & White Health Cardiovascular Governance Council and Director of Cardiovascular Research at The Heart Hospital Baylor Plano. He also co-founded and is Chair of the Board of Cardiopulmonary Research Science and Technology Institute (CRSTI). He has over 400 peer reviewed medical publications. 

Dr. Mack was President of the Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS) 2011 and is Past President of the Thoracic Surgery Foundation for Research and Education (TSFRE) 2009-2011, the Southern Thoracic Surgical Association (STSA) 2009 and the International Society for Minimally Invasive Cardiothoracic Surgery (ISMICS) 2000.
 
He has served on the Board of Directors of the STS and is currently on the Board of Directors of CTSNet. and is a member of the American College of Cardiology Foundation (ACCF) Board of Trustees and the the ACC Interventional Scientific Council. He is an honorary Fellow of the German Society for Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery and the Indian Association of Cardiothoracic Surgery. He was the first Chair of the STS/ACC National Transcatheter Valve Therapy (TVT) Registry Steering Committee and is the liaison to the TVT Registry from the ACCF National Cardiac Data Registry (NCDR) Management Board and is on the Steering Committee of the Cardiothoracic Surgery Network (CTSN) of the NIH. He is a member of the FDA MDEpiNet Advisory Committee, the NCDR Management Board and the Brookings Institute National Medical Device Postmarket Surveillance System Planning Board. 


 
Katie Moriarty MD, PhD

Katie Moriarty, MD. PhD, is a non-invasive cardiologist with HealthPartners at Regions Hospital in St. Paul, Minnesota.  She serves as the Medical Director of the Congestive Heart Failure Clinic, as well the as Director of Cardiovascular Research.



 
Dr. Marc Newell
Director of TeleCardiology
Minneapolis Heart Institute

Dr. Marc Newell is the Director of TeleCardiology at the Minneapolis Heart Institute in Minneapolis, MN.  Dr. Newell is currently a Consulting Cardiologist with the Minneapolis Heart Institute, with duties consisting of clinical work, advanced cardiac imaging including Coronary CT Angiography, and is a member of the group’s Executive Committee and Cardiovascular Service Line Board.

Dr. Newell completed his undergraduate work at Gustavus Adolphus College, then proceeded to the University of Minnesota for Medical School, where he graduated with alpha omega alpha honors.  Dr. Newell did residency training, including a chief resident year, at Abbott Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis.  Cardiology Fellowship was completed at the University of Minnesota.  Dr. Newell is in his fourth year of clinical practice with the Minneapolis Heart Institute.  Dr. Newell has published 33 abstracts, 12 manuscripts, and 4 textbook chapters in areas ranging from Coronary CT Angiography to Systems of Care and Regional STEMI networks.  Dr. Newell also serves as an Adjunct Professor of Cardiology at the University of Minnesota and directs the Cardiology rotation for the ANW Residency Program and the Advanced Imaging Rotation for the MHI/Hennepin County Medical Center Cardiology Fellowship.


 
Jeff Ozmon

Jeff has more than 20 years of healthcare industry experience serving health systems, hospitals, medical groups and academic institutions. For the past 4 years, Jeff has served as the VP at Sanger Heart and Vascular Institute, an integrated 85 member cardiology and CT surgery group at Carolinas Healthcare System. During Jeff’s tenure at Sanger he was responsible for 26 locations, representing over 500 employees in North Carolina and South Carolina. Previously, he spent 3 years with LarsonAllen, LLP as a healthcare consultant with expertise in physician-hospital alignment, strategic and business planning, compensation plans, process improvement, organizational development, governance and leadership development.

Jeff's experience also includes serving as large group administrator for Primary Care, Multispecialty and Specialty group in both private practice and integrated health systems including Sentara and Columbia/HCA. He has a Masters of Business Administration from Averett University and is a Certified Medical Practice Executive since 2009.


 
Cathy Puetz MD
Emergency Physician/MedAxiom Consultant

Cathy has been a practicing Emergency Room physician for 18 years. In addition, she was the Associate Medical Director of ED/ Cardiovascular services from 2007-2013. In her role as medical director, Cathy worked closely with both the Emergency Department and the Division of Cardiology. Cathy played an instrumental role in the successful accreditation of West Michigan’s first certified Chest Pain Center - working closely with Cardiology to improve D2B times as well as serving as the physician champion of a very successful Regional STEMI network.  More recently, Cathy’s focus has been on Observation Medicine.  Under her leadership, the Observation Unit grew to its current size of 48 beds serving both medical and cardiovascular patients. She has developed many evidenced based clinical protocols for observation patients, most significantly the cardiovascular observation patient. With her firm understanding of the complexity of observation medicine she has been able to assist other hospitals in the development and implementation of an ED Observation unit.



 
Joel Sauer

For over 14 years, Joel Sauer was Chief Executive Officer of a large Midwestern multi-specialty physician group. Through his leadership, the group expanded from a single specialty practice of 15, to over 225 physicians with over 600 employees in nearly every medical specialty.
 
In 2009, Joel orchestrated the acquisition of his own group by a large health system and then acquiring other practices to create an accountable care network. Beyond engineering the transaction details, Joel provided the leadership behind the operational and cultural integration of the merged entities. Beginning in 2001, Joel led his group's conversion from a paper chart to a full electronic health record. Given the complexity of the process, both from an operational and cultural standpoint, Joel considers this one of his greatest accomplishments. Joel headed up two significant site development projects for the group including the construction of an attached, two operating room, ambulatory surgery center and a significant expansion and renovation of the group's previous building. Other relevant experiences Joel brings to the table include: strategic planning, joint venture formation, hospital/health system relations, financial analysis, payor contract negotiations, implementing operational efficiencies, and ancillary services creation.
 
Prior to his tour as CEO, Joel worked for a large hospital, managed an outpatient ancillary services business, and worked for a healthcare software developer in implementation and support.


 
Kristine White RN, BSN, MBA

Kristine K. S. White, RN, BSN, MBA, Principal, Aerate Consulting, and Co-founder, Aefina Partners LLC, is also faculty at the Institute of Health Care Improvement.  Prior to these current activities, she served in senior leadership roles at Spectrum Health, most recently as system vice president of patient affairs and president, Spectrum Health Innovations. Her areas of expertise include leadership and system design for cultures of excellence and innovation. She has particular interest in working with leaders to identify strategic opportunities with to align and leverage improvement efforts in quality, safety, patient experience and efficiency- with an intent of designing innovative methods and models of care.

Ms. White’s most recent work includes working with physicians to increase effectiveness of physician communication efforts, working with leaders and teams to drive meaningful improvement in the patient and family experience in organizations of all types and coaching senior teams to strategically focus and prioritize efforts that yield value to patients within their systems.  

In all efforts, her overriding focus is to connect leaders and health care teams to a clear purpose, with measurable and sustainable impact, and value to patients and their families.
