Jeffrey Borenstein
Technical Director - Biomedical Engineering Center
Charles Stark Draper Laboratory
Jeffrey Borenstein is Laboratory Technical Staff at the Charles Stark Draper Laboratory in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Dr. Borenstein is a Technical Director for several of Draper’s programs in artificial organs, tissue engineering and implantable devices. His expertise is in MEMS fabrication technology, biological microsystems and the development of microdevices for therapeutic clinical applications. Dr. Borenstein currently serves as Principal Investigator for projects involving the application of microsystems technology towards engineered tissue constructs for organ assist devices and drug discovery, as well as implantable drug delivery systems for hearing loss and other diseases. These programs are funded by the Department of Defense, the National Institutes of Health and several commercial sponsors.
 
Prior to joining Draper Laboratory in 1994, Dr. Borenstein held positions as a research scientist for North American Philips Corporation and Mobil Corporation. Dr. Borenstein has a Ph.D. in Physics from the University at Albany and holds 23 issued patents, as well as 50 published patent applications and over 80 peer-reviewed journal articles and conference proceedings.

Mark earned a BSEE from Northeastern University and has over 30 years experience encompassing product conception, design, and Marketing and Business development. He began his career at Draper Labs working on navigation systems, early robotics and other forward looking bio-medical projects. This experience is the source for his passion for medical product solutions. He later worked at Analogic where we worked on products such as CAT-scanners, MRI, wireless heart monitors, in-hospital patient monitoring systems and ultra sound equipment.
 
In 1990 Mark joined Motorola expanding his experience in applications engineering, program management, strategic marketing and business development. He was involved in the ground breaking “Interactive Media Festival” where the artist used technology to create immersive interactive virtual environments. This experience lead to his study of intelligent or learning interfaces that provide more intuitive human-machine interfaces that create more “human like” or natural interactivity between people and the machines they use.
 
Currently employed by Freescale, Mark specializes in medical device solutions. He is focused on intelligent health and wellness monitoring systems that are easy to use and help one to maintain a person’s Quality of Life.
 
Asmita Khanolkar
Program Manager

Asmita Khanolkar has a Masters degree in Material Science & Engineering from Worcester Polytechnic Institute & Bachelor’s degree in Polymer Science and Engineering. She has over seventeen years of experience in the manufacturing industry including device manufacturing and product launch. Her current position at SMC as a Program Manager involves project management from concept to contract manufacturing for medical devices. The device product portfolio includes surgical devices, orthopedics, respiratory, cardio, patient safety and health monitoring devices, biomedical and cell regeneration devices, drug delivery, sports regenerative surgery, blood collection, diagnostics, needle protection and airway products.
 
Karen Lightman
Managing Director

Karen Lightman became MEMS Industry Group (MIG) managing director in June 2007. Formerly director of special projects, Karen played a pivotal role in launching MIG in January 2001. Karen is active on the worldwide MEMS conference circuit as a keynote speaker and panelist promoting MIG’s role as the leading trade association advancing MEMS across global markets. Karen manages the operations of MIG, spearheads strategic growth, and oversees sales, public relations, marketing and outreach. Karen plays a critical role in creating the content for all MIG and MIG-partner conferences, events and programming. She is instrumental in establishing and maintaining partnerships with other international organizations to advance the MEMS industry.
 
Karen joined MIG from Carnegie Mellon University's Center for Economic Development where she was senior policy analyst. Prior to Carnegie Mellon, Karen was senior associate at Cleveland Tomorrow, a public-private partnership, and before that, she was a program associate with the Ford Foundation. Karen has a BA from the University of Vermont (UVM) and a MS in Public Policy from Carnegie Mellon University.
 
Karen is a board member and chair of the Board Development Committee of the National Council of Jewish Women (NCJW), Pittsburgh and in 2012 received the NCJW national award for Emerging Leaders. Karen is secretary for her UVM alumni class, mentor at UVM’s Honors College, and volunteers at the Environmental Charter School at Frick Park. Karen and her family reside in Pittsburgh, PA.
 
Mehran Mehregany

Mehran Mehregany received his M.S. and Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1986 and 1990, respectively. From 1986 to 1990, he was a consultant to the Robotic Systems Research Department at AT&T Bell Laboratories, where he was a key contributor to ground-breaking research in microelectromechanical systems (MEMS).
 
Dr. Mehregany joined the Department of Electrical Engineering and Applied Physics at Case Western Reserve University as an Assistant Professor in 1990. He was promoted to Associate Professor in 1994 and Full Professor in 1997, held the George S. Dively Professor of Engineering endowed chair (1998 to 2000), and has since held the Goodrich Professor of Engineering Innovation endowed chair. He served as the Director of the MEMS Research Center (1995 to 2002) and Chairman of the Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Department (January 2003 to January 2006) at Case. He served as the Faculty Director of Development for the Case School of Engineering 2010-2011 (while based in San Diego).
 
Dr. Mehregany was the founding Executive Vice President of Engineering, Chief of Engineering Research, and the Gary and Mary West Endowed Chair of Wireless Health Technology at the West Wireless Health Institute from November 2009 through August 2010 (taking a leave from Case). During this period, he formulated the Institute's engineering program, recruited the initial talent, and launched the initial research activities and product developments, including Sense4Baby which is currently being commercialized by the West Health Institute (fka, West Wireless Health Institute). Dr. Mehregany proposed the Case School of Engineering San Diego Programs to the University in 2006 and founded the Case School of Engineering San Diego Programs in July 2007 and its Wireless Health Program in 2010; he is the Director of these programs and has a secondary appointment in the Biomedical Engineering Department.
 
Tom O'Dwyer

In his current role as Director of Healthcare Technology, he has responsibility for all aspects of semiconductor technology for the worldwide healthcare market including Medical imaging, Patient monitoring equipment such as ECG and pulse oximetry, and Home healthcare. His main focus is on new and emerging technologies in areas such as MEMS devices, biotechnology, body-worn sensors, and electrochemistry.

He holds a Bachelor of Electronic Engineering degree from University College Dublin, Ireland and a Masters degree in Computer Systems from the University of Limerick, Ireland. He is a founder and active member of the Biomedical Diagnostics Institute, a joint industry–academic research institute based at Dublin City University funded by the Irish government developing next generation portable diagnostic systems. He is also a visiting scientist and advisory board member of the Medical Device Realization Center (MEDRC) at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, which develops advanced patient monitoring and imaging systems.

 
Brian O'Loughlin

Brian O’Loughlin is a graduate of the University of South Australia with a bachelors in science majoring in electrical engineering. Brian worked for well over a decade for Texas Instruments in both Australia and the USA, occupying roles including: lead electrical switching design engineer, automotive sensor design & integration engineer, program manager for automotive new product development group, as well as sales and marketing roles.
 
Since 2006 Brian has been involved in direct MEMS foundry fabrication and development services. Since 2009 Brian has been the foundry sales manager for Santa Barbara based IMT MEMS (www.imtmems.com), serving their eastern US and international based customers. Brian has been involved with customers throughout development and production implementations in multiple fields; including medical and biomedical, precision & infrared (IR) optics, automotive, industrial and high volume consumer based MEMS. IMT is proud to have developed a disposable fluidic MEMS cell sorting device that has since been licensed and productised.
 
Martin Schmidt
Associate Provost and Professor of Electrical Engineering

Martin A. Schmidt received his BS degree from the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1981 and his SM and PhD degrees from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1983 and 1988 respectively. Since 1988 he has been a faculty member in the Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Department at MIT. From 1999 to 2006 he served as the Director of the Microsystems Technology Laboratories (MTL) at MIT. In July of 2008 he assumed his current position as Associate Provost at MIT. In his role as Associate Provost, he is the senior Institute official responsible for MIT’s industrial engagements.
 
His teaching and research is in the areas of micro and nanofabrication of sensors, actuators, and electronic devices, microelectromechanical systems (MEMS), design of micromechanical sensors and actuators, and micro/nanofabrication technology. He is the co-author of more than 80 archival journal publications and 120 peer-reviewed conference proceedings. His is also an inventor on more than 30 issued US Patents. More than 25 students have completed their Ph.D. degrees under his supervision. He is a recipient of the National Science Foundation Presidential Young Investigator Award and an Honorary Doctorate from the Technical University of Denmark. He was elected as a Fellow of the IEEE in 2004 for contributions to design and fabrication of microelectromechanical systems. He has received the Ruth and Joel Spira Teaching Award and the Eta Kappa Nu Teaching Award at MIT.
 
 
Mehmet Toner
Professor of Surgery

Dr. Mehmet Toner is a Professor of Surgery at the Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) and Harvard Medical School. Dr. Toner is also a faculty member at the Harvard-MIT Division of Health Sciences and Technology. He is the principal investigator and serves as the Director of the BioMicroElectroMechanical Systems Resource Center at MGH. Dr. Toner received a BS degree from Istanbul Technical University and an MS degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), both in Mechanical Engineering. He subsequently completed his PhD degree in Medical Engineering at Harvard University- MIT Division of Health Sciences and Technology in 1989.
 
Dr. Toner is a member of many national and international professional committees. He serves as the Associate Editor of the Journal of Biomechanical Engineering, Associate Editor of the Annual Reviews in Biomedical Engineering, member of the Editorial Board of the journals of Cryobiology and Cryo-Letters. In 1994, he was recognized by the Y.C. Fung Young Faculty Award in Bioengineering from the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME). In 1997, he won the John F. and Virginia B. Taplin Faculty Fellow Award given by Harvard and MIT for his contribution to these two institutions in bioengineering research and education. In 2000, Dr. Toner was selected to become a Fellow of the American Institute of Medical and Biological Engineering.
 
Shane Walker
Associate Director at InMedica

Shane Walker leads Consumer Medical Devices & Digital Health research at InMedica, the Medical Electronics division of IMS Research (recently acquired by IHS). Shane joined IMS Research in 2007 as an analyst in the company’s Consumer Electronics group, which he subsequently managed before moving into InMedica. Shane’s current medical research areas of coverage include telehealth and activity monitoring.

During the past five years Shane diversified the scope of coverage provided by the Consumer Electronics group, expanding into areas such as next generation user interfaces, encoding, Internet video, secure media delivery and digital signage. He has authored several syndicated reports, provided strategic market analysis for end equipment manufacturers, and has served as a recurring judge and moderator for the IPTV World Forum events as well the CSI Product of the Year Awards and the TV 3.0 conference. He has also served as a guest speaker for Intel’s Leadership Day Conference, the Institute of Engineering and Technology’s Annual International IPTV Conference, the TV 3.0 Conferences and the Embedded Vision Alliance. 

 
Stephen Whalley
Director, Sensors

Stephen Whalley is the Cross Platform Technology Director for Sensors in the Intel Architecture Group at Intel. In this capacity, Steve is responsible for sensor technology strategy definition, implementation consistency, and maximizing hardware and software reuse across Smartphone, Tablet and PC platforms. Previously, Whalley has managed numerous PC and server platform technology enabling activities and several industry initiatives while at Intel. He was also a founding contributor to the USB program and Chairman of the USB Implementers Forum from 1996 to 1998. Moving to Chandler, Arizona in 1990 from the United Kingdom, Whalley has managed multiple product development and marketing programs in various areas of Intel. He joined Intel in February 1988, working as a European Marketing Manager in Swindon, England. Whalley earned a Bachelors of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering, graduating with Honors from the University of Salford, England. He also received a Masters Degree in International Management from the American Graduate School of International Management (‘Thunderbird’), Arizona. 
 
Mark Winter
Senior Director, Qualcomm Tricorder XPRIZE, Nokia Sensing X CHALLENGE

Mark Winter joins XPRIZE as the Senior Director of the Qualcomm Tricorder XPRIZE and Nokia Sensing X CHALLENGE with more than thirty years of management experience in high technology, information services and health informatics. He was most recently a founder and Executive Vice President of Gluco Fitness Center, Inc. which provides wireless blood glucose and physiological monitoring of people with diabetes as part of an integrated exercise, diet and education program.
 
Previously he served as the CEO of Simulis LLC which provided advanced clinical skills simulation-based training and assessment services that help large healthcare systems verify that their personnel follow evidence-based care practices and can safely operate medical devices. Mr. Winter began his career in Silicon Valley providing design and marketing for Apple, Adobe Systems, Lucid and Compression Laboratories. He was later recruited to serve as V.P. of Corporate Development for Continental Graphics Holdings, Inc. which developed and operated the leading producer of customized technical documents for the world’s fleet of commercial aircraft (known today as Boeing Datagraphics). Following that he served as Senior V.P. of Marketing and Corporate Development for e-SIM, Inc., a leading provider of software simulation tools for creating and testing the user interfaces of embedded systems such as cellular phones and other hand-held electronics.
 
Mr. Winter holds a MBA from Pepperdine University and has a BFA in Communications Design from Art Center College of Design (with Honors).
